Info

We are currently studying three protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania mexicana. These unicellular organisms are pathogenic to humans and they are the causative agents of amebiasis, Chagas disease and leishmanisis respectively. The main areas of study in which the laboratory is engaged are: (i) Development and implementing diagnostic methods, (ii) Identification of genes encoding parasite surface proteins involved in the interaction with the host and genes that codify parasite stage-specific antigens, (iii) Role of protein tyrosine phosphatases in the parasite biology and in the pathogenic mechanisms, (iv) Cellular and humoral immune response against native and recombinant antigens, and (v) Vaccines development.
